A Closer Look at Kuningan: The "City of Horses" at the Eastern Gate of West Java

KUNINGAN – Located at the eastern edge of West Java Province, Kuningan Regency holds geographical charm, crucial historical footprints, and a strong cultural identity. The region, whose administrative capital is in Kuningan District, plays an important role as one of the main eastern gateways into West Java, alongside Ciamis Regency, Cirebon Regency, Banjar City, and Pangandaran Regency.

Geographically, its location is considered highly strategic. The center of government is situated approximately 137 kilometers east of Bandung City, 34 kilometers south of Cirebon City, and 225 kilometers southeast of Jakarta.

Its position in a border area makes it a meeting point for various regional cultures. To the north, Kuningan directly borders Cirebon Regency. Moving east and southeast, the region intersects with Central Java Province, specifically Brebes Regency. Meanwhile, in the south, Kuningan borders Ciamis Regency and Cilacap Regency (Central Java), as well as Majalengka Regency to the west.

A Silent Witness to History and Cultural Diversity

Reporting on the reality of Kuningan would not be complete without touching on its historical aspects. Kuningan is not just a geographical crossroad, but a region that has made a significant mark on the history of the Republic of Indonesia's independence. The regency is widely known both nationally and internationally as the site of the Linggajati Agreement, an important diplomatic milestone for the nation.

From a sociocultural perspective, this region also displays a well-preserved harmony of diversity. In Cigugur District, local wisdom still breathes deeply through the presence of residents who firmly maintain their traditions as followers of the Sunda Wiwitan indigenous belief system.

The Story Behind the "City of Horses" Icon

One thing that cannot be separated from Kuningan's identity is its legendary nickname: the "City of Horses". This icon is deeply rooted in the history of local leadership from the past.

The horse here is not merely an aesthetic symbol, but a form of respect for an animal considered to be the embodiment of "Si Windu". Si Windu was a riding horse highly renowned for its agility, belonging to the Arya Kamuning family. Arya Kamuning himself was a charismatic leader in the Kuningan region during the era of the Cirebon and Pajang Sultanates. It is the toughness and agility of Si Windu that were later immortalized as the breath and spirit of Kuningan Regency to this day.
